An Adventure in Puglia, Italy: Discovering Hidden Gems and Unforgettable Experiences
Welcome to Puglia, the hidden gem of Italy, where the allure of authentic charm meets the excitement of exploring lesser-known destinations. If you're seeking an Italian adventure that's both captivating and budget-friendly, Puglia is the place to be. With fewer tourists compared to the bustling Amalfi Coast, you can immerse yourself in the rich history, indulge in mouthwatering cuisine, and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Matera: Unraveling the Enchanting Caves and Ruins
Welcome to Matera, a city with a unique history dating back thousands of years. The picturesque town, carved into the rocky hillsides, offers a surreal experience that transports you back in time. However, we couldn't help but chuckle at ourselves (this is code for crying for those who don’t know) when we got lost in the labyrinthine streets, maneuvering our giant rolling bags through the charming alleys.
In less than 24 hours, we managed to explore the captivating town and its fascinating ruins. The caves, known as "Sassi," provided a glimpse into the ancient way of life. Our taste buds were also treated to an incredible culinary experience at Piu Sud, a pizzeria that exceeded all expectations. Don't forget to satisfy your sweet tooth with some gelato at Laboratorio di Gelateria Artigianale i Vizi degli Angeli, or enjoy a drink at Lanfranchi Caffe. Our stay in a beautiful Airbnb, complete with stunning balconies overlooking the city's ruins and a delightful breakfast basket, added a touch of luxury to our adventure.
Alberobello: The Whimsical Land of Trullos
As we journeyed towards Polignano a Mare, we couldn't resist stopping in the enchanting city of Alberobello. This fairytale-like town is famous for its iconic trullo homes, charming stone huts with conical roofs. As we explored the town, we found it quieter in the evening, allowing us to soak in the tranquil ambiance. During the day, the town was bustling with tourists eager to capture the charm of these unique buildings.
Our overnight stay in a trullo home brought us closer as a family, transitioning from having separate rooms to sharing a cozy space. But the highlight of our Alberobello experience was the pizza cooking class with a warm and hospitable local family. Surrounded by laughter, wine, and cheese, we learned to make mouthwatering pizzas and indulged in individual tiramisu desserts. The memory of that evening will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Before departing, we savored a delightful lunch at Coppino and treated ourselves to more gelato, because why not!?, at Gelateria Arte Fredda.
Polignano a Mare: Where Beauty Meets Adventure
Arriving in Polignano a Mare, we were enchanted by its rich history and the allure of the turquoise sea. Our beautiful, newly renovated home with a mini kitchen on the top floor and a rooftop terrace overlooking the ocean made for a perfect stay. The town's history unfolded before us as we explored its charming streets and iconic beach. A refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters was the perfect way to start our day.
Food lovers, take note! The fried octopus sandwich at Pescaria is a culinary delight you simply cannot miss. And to truly experience the essence of Polignano a Mare, indulge in "Il Caffe Speciale" - a delightful blend of lemon and amaretto at Il supermago del gelo.
A highlight of our stay was a dinner at the legendary Ristorante Grotta Palazzese. Though it requires a reservation well in advance and comes with a price tag, the impeccable service and delectable food made it a truly unforgettable experience.
To unwind, we spent a leisurely day at Cala S Giovanni Beach Club, soaking up the sun and savoring delicious food and drinks.
We couldn't leave without exploring Monopoli, a beautiful town nearby. The vibrant energy and welcoming locals made our visit all the more special, culminating in a delightful dinner at Condominio 60.
Bari: A Perfect Farewell
Before bidding adieu to Puglia and heading to Naples, we made a stop in Bari, a city known for its history and thriving local culture. As we wandered through its charming streets, we stumbled upon three weddings at different churches, adding a touch of romance to our visit. The sight of handmade orecchiette, a local pasta specialty, available at every corner made it a perfect souvenir.
