They say all roads lead to Rome…

Back in 2013 I studied abroad at the American University of Rome and it truly was a life changing experience. I met lifelong friends, went on countless adventures and fell even more in love with food and traveling. I’ve been dying to go back to Italy ever since. So, when planning my most recent trip with my boyfriend James we decided to spend a few days wandering around The Eternal City. I had so much fun showing him around my favorite places, making new memories together and eating pasta, pizza and gelato just about every day.

If you ever get the chance to visit Rome, which I highly recommend you do, I’ve listed some of my favorite things to see, do and eat.

 Where to stay? Trastevere

If you’re like me, your dreams of Italy include cobblestone streets, winding roads that lead you to open piazzas and the clinking sounds of espresso cups against their saucers. If you want to make this dream a reality, I recommend staying in Trastevere. Located just over the Tiber River this charming neighborhood fulfills all of your Italian fantasies. During our most recent trip we stayed in an Air BnB with an amazing host who greeted us in the rain with a bread basket and Aperol.

Here you can literally walk to everywhere in Rome. From some of the most amazing restaurants to the Vatican, Piazza Navoa, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum and more! Need a break from walking? No problem. The tram has a handful of stops along Trestevere to give your feet a break.

Where to eat?

Dar Poeta – For pizza this is a must. There usually is a wait so I would recommend either getting there a bit early or be prepared to wait for a bit. It’s totally worth it!

Address: Vicolo Del Bologna 45

Da Otello – Here James and I split a pizza and a pasta. Both were incredible!

Address: Via della Pelliccia 47

Il Vicolo Caruso Restaurante (aka Tony’s) – I absolutely loved going here when I was studying abroad. The service is great the food is great and it’s everything you could imagine when you think of an Italian restaurant. Small tables, white and red checkered tablecloths, charming waiters, delicious food… oh and free tiramisu (if you’re lucky).

Address: Vicolo del Cinque 27

Tazza D’oro – When you’re visiting The Pantheon this is a great little café to get granita di caffe con panna. This is basically a coffee slushy with whipped cream, perfect for a hot summers day. If your standing facing The Pantheon turn left and you’ll notice the building because it has a big yellow sign.

Address: Via Marche 52

Giolitti – There are several amazing places for you to indulge your gelato cravings. Giolitti is one of the oldest in the city and is just a stone’s throw away from The Pantheon. They probably have over 40 flavors to choose from which makes frequent visits when visiting a must!

Address: Via degli Uffici del Vicario 40

Must See Tourist Spots

These are certainly all obvious “must-sees” but that’s because they are just that… a must see!

Vatican City – Even if you’re not religious I would recommend visiting Vatican City. The first Sunday of every month is free to go in and tour the museum. There’s A LOT to see here so my suggestion is to give yourself time to take it all in and possibly even get a tour guide to show you around.

The Colosseum – The lines can be long so you’re better off going early to try and get ahead of the crowd! James and I purchased a “guided tour” ticket which allowed us to go into a separate entrance where the line was much shorter. When purchasing these tickets, you don’t have to stay with your tour either. On your walk to the Colosseum you can check out the Roman Forum as well.

Piazza Navona – Feel like a local while going on a stroll in this picturesque piazza. Take in the beautiful art and architecture.

Trevi Fountain – Because who doesn’t like to make wishes?

Spanish Steps – Great place when you want to admire the architecture and take a quick break. It’s so much fun just to sit on the steps, people watch and soak in the fact that you’re living your best life in Rome. Plus, you can go for a stroll afterwards alongside Gucci, Fendi, Harry Winston and the likes.

The Pantheon – If you’re staying in Trastevere you’ll be surprised by how often you walk by this historic building.

Il Vittoriano (aka The Wedding Cake) – Stairs. So many stairs but boy, the view is so worth it. This stunningly beautiful marble building is breathtaking and once you make it to the top you’re rewarded with views of The Eternal City.

Villa Borghese – This beautiful park is located just past the Spanish Steps off of Piazza del Popolo. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is a great escape without having to go too far.

Campo de’ Fiori – From morning to night there is something to see here. Whether you’re looking to shop in an open-air market for keepsakes to take home to your friends and family or you’re looking to go out at night this little square just off of the main roads has it all.

P.S. Looks like River Island was sold out of the leopard cowl neck cami so I linked to the similar style and there are several different color/print options.
